1.5 Tons of Pot Found In Lettuce Shipment (U.S. Customs and Border Protection )

OTAY MESA, Calif. -- Border agents seized one and a half tons of marijuana from a  truck delivering produce across the U.S. – Mexican border in Otay Mesa, authorities announced Thursday.

A 27-year-old Mexican driver delivering lettuce to the U.S. was required to pull into the Otay Mesa cargo facility Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. for further inspection, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer Jackie Wasiluk said.

During the inspection, a narcotic detector dog was alerted to the shipment of lettuce, where CBP officers discovered 136 packages of marijuana hidden in the boxes,according to officers.

The packages weighed about 3025 pounds with an estimated cost of $1.8 million, said Wasiluk.
