LOS ANGELES -- A suspected drunken driver is being sought after fleeing a freeway crash that left his 20-year-old friend dead, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at 4:25 a.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway at La Brea Avenue, said CHP Officer Krystal Carter.

A speeding 2005 BMW rear-ended a truck, causing it to overturn and come to rest on the La Brea Avenue onramp, Carter said citing information from a preliminary investigation.

The driver of the BMW fled the scene on foot and remained at large. The man, from Lawndale, is expected to be investigated for drunken driving, Carter said.

Paul Michael Stout, 20, of Huntington Park died at the scene, said coroner's investigator Cheryl MacWillie. Carter said he had been the front seat passenger.

A second passenger in the car, a 21-year-old Santa Fe Springs man, suffered moderate injuries, as did the driver of the truck, a 41-year-old Hacienda Heights man, Carter said.
