MOORPARK, Calif. -- A motorist was seriously injured when someone threw a rock at his car on the 118 freeway in Moorpark. Two other vehicles were also struck by rocks and damaged.
Nicolas Angell, 40, was driving westbound on Highway 118 just west of Princeton Avenue about 12:25 a.m. Thursday when a softball-sized rock thrown from the right shoulder of the roadway crushed his windshield and hit his face, said Sgt. Mike Curtin of the California Highway Patrol's Moorpark station.
The rock broke several of Angell's teeth and caused multiple fractures to his face and nose, CHP officials said.
Angell was transported to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, where he was listed in stable condition. He had to undergo reconstructive surgery on his face Thursday afternoon.
Susan Barnhart, 52, of Thousand Oaks was driving westbound in the same location when a rock thrown from the shoulder struck her hood and windshield, Curtin said. The rock crushed Barnhart's windshield inward, but did not penetrate it, officials said.
About 10 minutes earlier, Melissa Baldibia, 26, of Moorpark was driving westbound in the same area when someone threw a rock from the right shoulder, striking her sunroof and causing moderate damage to her car, Curtin said.
Authorities found the rocks and removed them from the roadway.
Throwing rocks could lead to charges of assault with a deadly weapon, Curtin said.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the rock throwing incidents to call the Moorpark CHP office at 553-0800.
