LOS ANGELES -- Construction crews will shut down portions of Sunset Boulevard and the 405 Freeway on the west side to begin demolishing the southern half of the overpass.

the Sunset Boulevard bridge will be completely closed to traffic, beginning Friday night, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for six consecutive nights.

Individual lane closures could begin as early as 7 p.m.

The bridge will be reconstructed over the next 10 months before crews begin the same routine for the northern half of the overpass.

The bridge replacement is part of a $1-billion project, funded by local, state and federal money, that will add a 10-mile HOV lane on the northbound 405 between the 10 Freeway and U.S. 101.

The project includes widening lanes from the Santa Monica Fwy. (I-10) to the Ventura Fwy. (US-101).

Bridges at Skirball Center Drive and Mulholland Drive will also be replaced.

The Sunset Boulevard bridge will reopen during the day at 6 a.m. with reduced lanes.
