CAMARILLO, Calif. -- A damaged fiber optic cable has caused a major telephone service outage in Ventura County, including 911 emergency calls.
The outage was reported around 10:30 a.m. Monday and is affecting customers in Oxnard, Camarillo, Newbury Park, Santa Paula, Port Hueneme and parts of Malibu. The 911 emergency services in these areas have been affected.
Verizon found the location of the cable by noon. It was damaged during construction work at Lewis and Dawson roads in Camarillo. Some Internet services were restored but Davies said it will take several hours to repair the cable.
The Ventura County Fire Department cannot receive emergency calls, officials said.
Residents who have a police or fire emergency and receive a busy signal when they call 911 are asked to go to the nearest police or fire station to report an emergency.
In Oxnard and Santa Paula, the cities have temporarily established emergency cellular telephone line access for police, fire and ambulance calls.
