SOUTH GATE -- A mother and her boyfriend have been charged with abandoning a minor after they left the woman's 2-year-old daughter at a carnival.
Monday night, the woman was still being questioned as police tried to resolve what happened
The girl was abandoned at a parking lot across the street from a carnival on Firestone Boulevard and Madison Avenue.
Police said a man and a woman were arguing, and the man approached a security guard around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, asking him to watch the girl for a moment.
Security officers told police the man said his wife was "slightly intoxicated" and "very upset."
The couple left in a white sedan, but never returned.
The girl was placed in the custody of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.
Police circulated a photo of the girl, who was wearing a pink T-shirt, blue denim shorts and black tennis shoes.
On Monday morning, the couple came forward to try and reclaim the girl, saying it was a misunderstanding.
Anyone with more information about the case was urged to call the South Gate police watch commander at (323) 563-5457.
