SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (KTLA) -- Several abandoned pit bull puppies rescued in December still need new homes and a second chance.

Two days before Christmas, a Good Samaritan found 12 of the puppies, then 6-weeks-old, cramped in a crate alongside their mother. The dogs were abandoned, sick with Parvo and left for dead in San Clemente.

They are now at the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter receiving care.

Having that many sick puppies at one time was unusual, said Susan Walshe of the Pet Project Foundation.

"Maybe one at a time you'd see a Parvo case in maybe the 20 years I've been doing rescue work so this was a little overwhelming to say the least for our group and for the shelter," she said.

The animals have received 24-hour care at the shelter. Two of the puppies have died since their rescue. The remaining dogs are on the mend and need homes.

The cost of caring the for the dogs has been close to $30,000 and they will need at least six weeks' worth of care before they can go home with new owners, Walshe said.
