LOS ANGELES -- A man who allegedly raped his ex-girlfriend, shot another woman in an attempted car jacking and abducted four children was shot and wounded by police as the kids were rescued.

The suspect, identified as Angel Samos, 29, was shot around 5:30 p.m. near 16th Street and Pacific Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles police Officer Karen Rayner.

Investigators were led to Long Beach because Samos had contacted his mother, who lives in the area, police said.

Samos had a gun in hand and ran when SWAT officers moved in, according to an LAPD statement. Officers opened fire, hitting Samos in the head, the statement said.

Samos was hospitalized in stable condition and was expected to survive, Rayner said.

The children were recovered and were said to be unharmed.

Samos is accused of raping his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at a home near 79th Street and Broadway, said LAPD Lt. Faryl Fletcher of the Newton Station.

Samos then took the woman, her 11-year-old daughter and 6-year-old niece to a gas station at 45th Street and Avalon at 10:00 p.m. Saturday night where he attempted to carjack a 24-year-old woman, said Lt. Fletcher.

When the motorist resisted the carjacking, Samos allegedly shot her in the back.

The woman is expected to survive her wounds.

Lt. Fletcher said, at some point, Samos' ex-girlfriend fled the scene and he then left with the two girls and picked up two of his own children before escaping.

The children were identified as Matthew Samos, 1, Jose Diaz, 5, Ariana Wade, 6, and Ashley Tathkran, 11.

Police said the man called authorities from an undisclosed location and asked to trade at least some of the abducted children for his ex-girlfriend.
