Severed Leg Found in Field, Hospital Probe Launched
YUBA CITY -- An investigation has been launched involving several hospitals and medical facilities in one Northern California county after a severed human leg that had been amputated was found in a field.

A group of 30 people playing paintball found the limb Sunday afternoon. It had been amputated between the knee and the hip, and was lying in an area called Beer Can Beach along the Feather River.

The limb was that of a white male adult between 30 and 60 years old.

Officials initially thought the limb might be related to a nearby missing person case. The leg was found about two miles from where authorities had found an abandoned car, whose owner was reported missing Monday.

They're no longer investigating the case as a homicide. Instead, they are contacting medical facilities to see where the procedure may have been performed.

Officials say the limb was likely dumped about a week ago.
