SANTA ANA -- A 25-year-old man was indicted Thursday on charges of raping, torturing and murdering an 84-year-old widow in her Anaheim home.
Anthony Darnell Wade is accused of breaking into the home of Bessie Whyman on Jan. 10 by climbing through a broken window.
Prosecutors say he raped her, punched and kicked her, tied up her feet and hands and tortured her by repeatedly stabbing her with a kitchen knife.
Wade then covered her with a blanket and left her for dead as he ransacked her house looking for valuables before stealing her purse and car, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
He was arrested in San Bernardino later the same day after trying to use one of Whyman's credit cards.
Wade was also indicted for the special circumstances of committing murder during the commission of rape, torture, robbery and burglary, making him eligible for the death penalty .
