REDONDO BEACH -- Police are searching for a former Arco employee suspected of stealing debit card numbers from customers at a station in Redondo Beach.
Police say a skimming device intercepted the personal information from as many of 1,000 people and withdrew $200,000 from their bank accounts.
Customers started reporting the thefts last week, but more victims have come forward this week, police said.
The victims are customers of the Arco station at Pacific Coast Highway and Prospect who have been using debit cards at the ATM islands to pay for their gas.
Police received 20 theft reports on May 12 and 13. Officers received 45 telephone calls Tuesday morning, Keenan said.
Even some police officers are victims, according to Keenan. Investigators are advising anyone who has purchased gas at the ARCO station to carefully check their bank statements.
Police say the employee worked at the station for eight months and then disappeared. They say he rigged one or more ATM's to skim account numbers and PIN numbers.
Police don't know the true identity of the suspect. He used an alias and a fake driver's license to get a job at the Arco station as a cashier.
Money is still being stolen from customers' accounts, with new transactions posting daily.
