WESTMINSTER -- A man suspected of trying to rob an off-duty L.A. County sheriff's deputy at an ATM on Tuesday is in custody tonight.
Jose Guillermo Hernandez Luna, 23, of Santa Ana, was stopped by Newport Beach patrol officers who found drugs on him, police said.
The attempted robbery occurred at the Chase Bank at 14041 Beach Boulevard around 6:48 a.m. according to Lt. Kevin Baker of the Westminster Police Department.
The gunman approached the off-duty police officer who was using the ATM and demanded cash, threatening him with a silver handgun, Baker said.
The deputy pulled out his gun, and the men fired at each other, Baker said. The deputy fired six shots. No one was hurt.
Luna is also suspected of stealing a car from Garden Grove and robbing a woman of a cell phone at a Garden Grove ATM that same morning.
