AZUSA -- An investigation is underway after a man in custody was shot and killed by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies following a short pursuit near Azusa.
The shooting occurred about 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the 17000 block of Orkney Street, said sheriff's Sgt. Diane Hecht.
Investigators say the suspect was spotted driving a stolen vehicle, sparking the pursuit.
The suspect eventually got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
The man was later captured and the deputy-involved shooting occurred while the suspect was either in custody or being taken into custody. A resident reported hearing about six gunshots during the incident.
Sheriff's detectives have not yet released details of the shooting, specifically what prompted deputies to open fire.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sheriff's Department identified the dead man as a "male white adult."
No deputies were injured, Hecht said.
Sheriff's homicide detectives and the Los Angeles District Attorney's office are investigating the incident.
