HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Many Californians are frying in the sun along with their turkeys this Thanksgiving as temperatures in the 70s and 80s entice families to take the celebration outside -- even to the beach.
Eric Spillman joined the Beardsley family, who set up a Thanksgiving table for about 40 at Bolsa Chica State Beach while roasting turkeys in a customized fire pit.
"Lots of planning, lots of prep and lots of good family. That's all it takes," Sean Beardsley, the burly chef in charge of the spread told KTLA.
"It's the best way to go."
For years, members of the Beardsley family have piled into recreational vehicles -- eight this year -- and met at the beach to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Beardsley has perfected his method of wrapping turkeys in foil and chicken wire, throwing them into the fire, then covering the pit with corrugated metal and sand.
"Underneath coals for six hours and pull it out, and it's perfect every time," he said.
Beardsley planned to cook four turkeys and a large beef brisket.
Beach temperatures are expected to reach the mid 70s, while valley and inland areas top out in the lower 80s.
