SAN DIMAS -- A bear was spotted wandering around a residential neighborhood in San Dimas Wednesday afternoon, climbing fences and even cooling off in a backyard pool.
The black bear, estimated to weigh about 350 pounds, was spotted around 1:35 p.m.
Several neighbors said they saw the bear roaming through backyards. It even jumped into one resident's pool and took a dip for several minutes.
By the time Sheriff's deputies arrived, the bear had climbed a nearby pine tree, where it stayed for about an hour. Officials warned residents to stay indoors.
Deputies used horns and other tactics to try and scare the bear away without having to tranquilize it.
The animal eventually jumped down and continued to wander through several backyards before making its way back to the wilderness.
Wildlife officials say its not unusual in the summer months to see bears looking for food and a cool place to beat the heat.
San Dimas is a community located at the base of the Angeles National Forest.
