Tree Snaps During Thunderstorm, Crushing Woman
BIG BEAR -- A woman has died after a wind-blown tree crushed her car as she drove through a residential area during a thunderstorm.

Elena Martinez, 31, was killed Wednesday morning as she drove along Catalina Road above Avalon Drive.

Big Bear Lake fire officials say the large pine tree, rooted near the roadside, snapped about halfway up its trunk during strong winds.

The broken tree also took down electrical lines causing power outages in the immediate area.

Meantime, in Fontana, a 40-year-old woman was struck and killed by lightning outside a home this afternoon, police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, was standing in front of a home on Bennett Avenue at about 4:30 p.m., near a tree, when the incident occurred, said Fontana police Sgt. Jeff Decker.

Her neighbors found the woman face down on the sidewalk after hearing two thunder claps.
