PERRIS -- A man wanted in connection with the deaths of his wife and stepdaughter has been taken into custody in New Mexico, Riverside County Sheriff's officials said Sunday.
Authorities sought Michael Barbar, 52, for questioning after his 43-year-old wife and her 6-year-old daughter were found dead over the weekend.
Barbar was found in a motel next to Interstate 10 in Deming, N.M., according to deputies.
Riverside sheriff's homicide detectives were en route to New Mexico to speak with Barbar, Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Craig Roberts said.
A second child, a 10-year-old girl described as another daughter, was found alive inside the home by authorities. It wasn't clear if she witnessed anything.
The bodies were discovered about 8 a.m. Saturday at the Barbar family home in the 2800 block of Banner Place in Perris. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department issued a statement saying the father had "fled the scene."
The mother was identified as Maysam Barbar; her 6-year-old daughter was identified as Tamara Barbar.
At first investigators believed Michael Barbar might have been heading to Las Vegas. On Sunday authorities said he had, in fact, driven through Nevada en route to New Mexico.
Neighbors told authorities and reporters outside the Barbar house that the parents had been going through a messy divorce.
