ANAHEIM -- A man and woman in Anaheim have been arrested for allegedly leaving their 5-year-old son asleep inside a car while they got high on methamphetamine.
Orange County sheriff's deputies were investigating a possible vehicle burglary in progress about 2:15 a.m. Sunday when they found the sleeping boy alone in a car parked in the 9100 block of Regal Ave., Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino told KTLA.
"We were checking the cars to see which had been broken into, and lo and behold, we found the 5-year-old asleep in the car," Amormino said. "That takes precedence over anything else. Apparently they left the kid asleep while they got high on methamphetamine."
The boy's parents were found inside two separate homes getting high on meth, Amormino said.
"I think they were just using drugs in two separate houses," Amormino said. "Once they found the parents, they found them under the influence. To me, that's unfathomable."
Jose Santana and wife Cynthia Franco, both 25, were arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and being under the influence of a controlled substance, he said.
Santana has a history of run-ins with the law, including numerous convictions for drugs and a 2009 domestic violence conviction. Franco also has a history of drug and theft convictions.
The boy has been placed in protective custody.
