EAST LOS ANGELES -- Homicide detectives are investigating the suspicious death of a homeless man who was found with burns on his body in East Los Angeles.

The victim was found in an alley near the 5000 block of Whittier Boulevard shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday, according to the sheriff's department.

The unidentified man had burn marks on his body under suspicious circumstances, said Deputy Jeff Gordon.

Investigators were trying to determine whether the man was burned to death or suffered the burns after he died.

Gordon said the victim was a transient who may have frequented the area.

Arson and explosives officials were aiding in the investigation.
