LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Bus riders may have to stand while waiting for a bus in Los Angeles after several benches have been disappearing at bus stops across the city.

Norman Bench Advertising, which provides and manages the city's roughly 6,000 bus benches, began removing them last week because it was not awarded a new contract, the Los Angeles Times first reported.

The company has maintained the benches in exchange for advertising revenue for more than 10 years.

But, the city says the company has failed to disclose how many benches it has and how much money it earns from displaying ads on them.

The city council is expected to vote next week on a new contract with a different company -- Martin Outdoor Media.

At least three districts have had bus benches removed, according to Board of Public Works Commissioner Andrea Alarcon.

Officials say it could be some time before the city is able to replace the disappearing benches.
