CAMARILLO -- A 9 year-old-boy was accidentally shot in the face by his 13-year-old stepbrother while they were playing a "cops and robbers" game at their home in Camarillo, police said.
The incident happened around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment in the 2700 block of Antonio Avenue.
The boys' parents were at work, and they were home with their grandfather.
He heard the shot while he was in the shower. Once he discovered what had happened, he called 911.
The 9-year-old boy was hit in the cheek, and the bullet passed through the back of his jaw.
He was taken to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks. Doctors said he suffered only soft-tissue damage, and his injuries were non-life-threatening.
The shooting is still under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest it was accidental, according to Camarillo police detectives.
The 13-year-old boy put the gun -- a Glock .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol -- back where he found it.
Investigators are now looking into how the gun was secured.
They recovered the gun, and also temporarily confiscated a small-caliber rifle.
No charges have been filed in the case.
The boys have not been identified because of their age.
