Brush Fire Burning Near Sloan Canyon Road

CASTAIC -- Firefighters have completely contained a 55-acre brush fire in Castaic, as well as a fire sparked when a bus broke out in flames in the same area, fire officials say.

A brush fire burning near the Golden State (5) Freeway at Sloan Canyon Road was completely surrounded early Saturday, according to County Fire Dispatcher Brenden Peart.

Patrols will likely be in place throughout the day Saturday "mopping up" in the fire's wake, Peart said.

The blaze was reported at 2:32 p.m. Friday and burned across about 55 acres, according to fire officials.

More than 200 firefighters were fighting the fire on the ground and from the air.

Only one injury was reported -- a heat-related injury to a firefighter.

No evacuations were ordered, though voluntary evacuations were conducted along Victoria Road and Mustang Drive.

As firefighters worked to contain that brush fire, an Amtrak bus was fully engulfed in flames on the 5 Freeway in Castaic, and the fire quickly spread up a nearby hill.

The bus caught fire at around 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon on the northbound 5 Freeway near Temple Highway .

Smoke and embers spewed from the bus as it sat on the side of the freeway, though winds pushed the dangerous flames away form the roadways.

In all, the fire sparked by the bus consumed more than 10 acres before it was knocked down.

Northbound traffic on the 5 was brought to a halt when firefighters arrived on the scene. Then No. 3 and 4 lanes remained closed into the early evening on Friday, and traffic was crawling along. All lanes have since been reopened.

All nine passengers and the driver got off the bus before it was engulfed.

The passengers from the bus were safely evacuated, and another bus arrived to pick them up.

All luggage was removed as well, and the passengers were picked up by another bus to continue their trip.

The bus, operated by Coach America, was traveling from Torrance to Bakersfield.

Neither of the fires damaged any structures.

Another small blaze erupted in the brush off the side of the 5 and 14 freeways just south of Santa Clarita early Saturday.

The fire was reported about 3:30 a.m., and was declared knocked down around 4:40 a.m.

It took 40 firefighters to extinguish the blaze, which scorched about two acres. No injuries were reported.

The initial report of the fire said it was sparked by a transformer explosion, a dispatch supervisor said, but he noted that the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
