CHATSWORTH -- Passengers who were killed or injured in last year's Metrolink train crash will be remembered Saturday at two memorial services to mark the one year anniversary of the tragedy.
The first memorial took place at 9:30 a.m. on the south end of Stoney Point Park, which overlooks the crash site.
A plaque honoring the victims and rescuers was placed on the north end of the park.
The ceremony featured benedictions, a helicopter fly-over, a bagpipe player and a release of 25 white doves.
People affected by the crash presented roses in tribute to the victims.
A second memorial is scheduled to take place at the Simi Valley Rail Station. 5050 Los Angeles Avenue, at 4 p.m.
The event will be held at a memorial plaza recently completed with benches to honor the crash victims. Ten Simi Valley residents were killed in the accident.
On Friday, a ceremony held at Chatsworth Hills Academy to remember the crash victims.
Twenty-five people were killed and 135 injured when a Metrolink train collided head-on with a Union Pacific freight train Sept. 12, 2008.
Metrolink unveiled a plaque Tuesday honoring the 25 people who died in the wreckage.
The bronze plaque dedicated at a downtown train station depicts a track nearing a tree-shrouded bend.
Beneath the picture it reads: "Unfinished Journeys. In memory of those who have died. With empathy for those affected. In gratitude to those who responded and rescued."
"(The plaque) was designed to remind us of those who we have lost," said Metrolink Board Chairman Keith Millhouse.
He said the plaque also is meant to honor those affected by train accidents, including friends, loved ones and first-responders.
The Chatsworth crash was the second deadliest train crash in U.S. history.
Federal investigators have said the Metrolink engineer was sending a text message on his cell phone just seconds before the crash.
The crash has led to calls for safety improvements on train systems not just in Los Angeles, but across the country.
