2008 Chatworth Train Crash Killed 25 People (L.A. Times) |
LOS ANGELES -- Metrolink and Connex Railroad have been ordered to deposit $200 million into a victims' compensation account for the 2008 commuter train crash that killed 25 people and injured dozens of others.
However, the federal judge in charge of the case has yet to decide if he will approve the settlement.
In the meantime, Judge George H. Wu ordered Monday that the money be deposited by Oct. 20.
September 12th, 2008, a Metrolink train heading to Ventura County crashed head-on with a Union Pacific freight train in Chatsworth, killing 25 people and injuring 125 more.
The National Transportation Safety Board earlier this year found that the engineer, who died in the accident, was texting when he ran a red light warning him not to proceed down the single-track section.
$200 million is the federal cap on passenger rail accidents.
Some critics of the settlement say that amount isn't enough because more than 100 lawsuits are still pending in courts.
