ROWLAND HEIGHTS ( KTLA) -- The man who was shot and killed by deputies after he allegedly attacked his mother's boyfriend with a meat cleaver has been identified as 31-year-old Alexander Acosta.
Sheriff's officials say they received a 9-1-1 call of an assault with a deadly weapon on Friday night from an apartment in the 18500 block of Colima Road. According to dispatchers, the female caller told them that her son was stabbing her boyfriend.
When deputies entered the apartment, they say Acosta was sitting on the chest of another man and slashing his head and neck with a meat cleaver. Acosta was ordered to drop the cleaver but instead, deputies say he ignored them and continued his attack.
One of the deputies then opened fire with his service weapon and shot the suspect three times.
Acosta stopped his alleged attack and ran to the kitchen where he collapsed and died.
The man who was being attacked was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.
What led up to the initial attack is still being investigated.
