LOS ANGELES -- Investigations are underway into three deadly deputy-involved shootings in southeast Los Angeles County over the weekend, including one that claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy.

The latest incident occurred just before 9 p.m. Sunday near a motel in Norwalk, said Deputy Ed Hernandez of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

The deputy, a 13-year-veteran, came across a suspicious man in the parking lot of the Towne House Motel, 11650 Imperial Highway, Hernandez said.

As the deputy attempted to check the 24-year-old man for weapons, a scuffle broke out and the man tried to draw a loaded handgun from his waistband, Hernandez said.

The deputy shot the suspect in the upper torso, he added.

The man, identified as Leopoldo Huizar, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The deputy was not injured and a loaded handgun was recovered at the scene, Hernandez said.

Another man was killed during an exchange of gunfire with deputies in Compton

The incident began around 3 a.m. at Atlantic Avenue and Alondra Boulevard, said a sergeant at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Compton Station.

A man suspected of robbing a taco truck was involved in a "running gun battle" to the Long Beach (710) Freeway, Undersheriff Larry Waldie said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Felipe Valdovinos, 27, of Compton.

The unidentified deputy was transported to a hospital with a wound to the leg. He was listed in stable condition, according to the sheriff's department.

And in the first incident, gang enforcement officers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department shot and killed a 17-year-old boy in Lynwood.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Saturday in the 3100 block of Banning Avenue, near Peach Street, said Deputy Rick Pedroza of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

It was unclear why deputies tried to stop the boy, who allegedly ran from them.

When the two deputies again attempted to contact the boy, he reached into his waistband, produced a handgun and pointed it at the deputies, Pedroza said.

Both deputies fired at the boy, hitting him multiple times. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The boy was identified as Trevion Richard of Long Beach, said coroner's investigator Larry Dietz.

At 11:30 a.m. Sunday, a fourth shooting incident involving authorities occurred when a Los Angeles Police Department officer shot a man in the 200 block of South Fresno Street in Boyle Heights, police said.

The man pointed a gun at the officer, who then fired and struck the man, said Gregory Baek of the LAPD.

The man has not been identified and was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, Baek said.

The recent string of shootings comes less than a week after Sheriff Lee Baca called for an expedited investigation into a deputy's fatal shooting of an unarmed man in Athens.

Darrick Collins, Sr. was killed in Athens on Sept. 14. His family called for murder charges to be filed against the deputy involved in the incident.

The number of fatal deputy-involved shootings this year stands at 13 compared to five in 2008, the Los Angeles Times reported.
