COMPTON -- Authorities are searching the hit-and-run driver of a mini van who witnesses say was talking on a cell phone when he struck and killed a man on a bicycle in Compton.

The entire incident was caught on tape by a surveillance camera.

The accident happened near Compton Boulevard and Dwight Avenue around 8:04 a.m. Monday, according to L.A. County Sheriff's Sgt. Peter Ramirez.

Three men told sheriff's deputies they saw the van hit the bicyclist, back up and check on the victim, then speed away.

The driver ran a red light while talking on his cell phone, according to witnesses.

The victim, 40-year-old Ovidio Morales, was riding north on Dwight Avenue and was struck by a silver or gray 1990s Ford passenger van, possible an Aerostar, that was traveling east on Compton Boulevard, Ramirez said.

The van was last seen going east on Compton Boulevard, he said.

Morales, a father of five, was treated by the Compton firefighters, but died of his injuries, Ramirez said.

Sheriff's traffic investigators were assigned to the case. Anyone with more information about the driver or the vehicle was asked to call deputies at (310) 605-6500
