COMPTON (KTLA) -- Friends and family are seeking answers after a 13-year-old boy collapsed and died following gym class at Whaley Middle School in Compton. The boy's death occurred while Southern California was in the midst of a Fall heat wave.

The 7th grader, identified as Luis Fraire, was walking toward the school locker room just before 9 a.m. Tuesday when he collapsed, said said Lt. Robert Peacock of the Compton sheriff's station.

Friends say Fraire had been running during an earlier gym class.

The boy had a history of heart problems and had complained of chest pains, Peacock said.

He was pronounced dead at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood.

Fraire's family members say they do not have the funds available to give the boy a proper burial. They're accepting donations, which can be submitted through Whaley Middle School.

The case is being investigated by homicide detectives because of the boy's age.

But, foul play is not suspected.

A crisis team was at the school Tuesday afternoon to provide support to students and staff affected by the death.

Fellow students told KTLA that on Monday, the hottest day of the year, they were "punished" and forced to stand outside in the 113-degree heat.

School officials released the following statement regarding Fraire's death:

"It is an extremely difficult time for the family of this student and our school family. At this time we want to respect the wishes and privacy of the student's family until formal funeral arrangements have been publicly shared."
