COVINA -- Police in Covina have arrested three women they say faked a child's funeral in a scheme to collect money.

The women allegedly made signs and solicited cash donations from drivers in the 900 block of Arrow Highway, according to Covina police.

Someone who had seen the same women holding up the same signs weeks before called police on Friday afternoon.

Officers then located the women and questioned them.

They claimed the money was going toward a funeral for a boy killed in a car accident, but police say their story quickly fell apart.

The suspects had collected nearly $1,000, police said.

Authorities say that, since there was no child and no funeral, the women are guilty of fraud.

The women are now facing criminal charges.
