Six coyotes were caught in traps and euthanized. One was shot and killed by a licensed hunter on Tuesday, according to Jim Beres, a civilian supervisor for the Laguna Beach Police Department, which oversees animal services in Laguna Woods.
Beres said the goal is not to remove all coyotes from the area, but to get rid of the overly aggressive ones.
He said authorities think there is still one more aggressive adult male coyote in the area, and they are trying to catch him.
The move to allow professionals to shoot and kill coyotes came after a series of attacks on residents and their pets.
The City Council voted to modified the city's firearms code, which previously allowed only off-duty officers to discharge firearms.
The most recent coyote attack happened earlier this week.
82-year-old Joan Cierzan says her small Poodle "Mocha" was pulled off a leash by a coyote right outside the gate of her home.
"I pulled him back because I didn't know why he jerked out like that, and then I fell backwards," Cierzan told KTLA.
Authorities say they've received multiple reports of coyote sightings in the Laguna Woods gated retirement community over the last few months.
Several small cats and dogs have been snatched away from their owners during daily walks.
Karen Sherif told police she was walking her Yorkshire Terrier, named "Pooh," near her home when she was knocked down by one of two coyotes which took her dog.
"The next thing I heard was her yelping and I turned around and there she was in the coyote's mouth," Sherif told KTLA.
Sherif held onto the dog's leash, but she eventually let go and fell to the ground.
She suffered minor injuries to her face. Her dog was killed by the coyote.
Sherif has a new small dog, and she says she will not let him outside.
In May, a woman was bitten after trying to save her small dog from a coyote. The dog was rushed to the veterinarian, but later died of its injuries.
Several cats have also been killed, prompting animal service officers to set up numerous traps and step up patrol in the area at night.
While coyote sightings in the area are not that unusual, experts say their bold and brazen behavior is unusual as some of the attacks have happened in broad daylight.
Experts say residents should avoid leaving small dogs or cats outside, unattended.
City officials are also telling residents they should not feed the coyotes.
