HARTFORD, Ct -- There are new demands from both national and international organizations that Craigslist remove its adult services section from its websites outside the United States.

The popular website has already stopped posting its adult services section on its sites within the U.S.

A statement released Tuesday by the Polaris Project, the Rebecca Project for Human Rights, the FAIR Fund, and Courtney's House - all anti-child trafficking groups - said more than 250 Craigslist erotic pages remain active on the company's non-U.S. webpages.

Craigslist replaced the link to the adult services section in the U.S. with a "censored" bar Saturday after U.S. state attorneys general demanded its removal.

They cited concerns that the website could not adequately screen out illegal ads promoting prostitution and child trafficking.

Craigslist has yet to explain the censored label or publicly respond to the request of the organizations.

The website has come under increased scrutiny since the jailhouse suicide last month of 24-year-old Philip Markoff, a former Boston University student.

Markoff was awaiting trial for the fatal shooting of Julissa Brisman of New York City and the armed robbery of a Las Vegas woman.

Rhode Island prosecutors also accused him of attacking a stripper. Markoff had met the women through ads for erotic services posted on Craigslist.
