JEFFERSON PARK -- Three people, including two Los Angeles Police Department officers, were hospitalized after a head-on collision between an LAPD cruiser and an SUV, which was apparently the result of a medical emergency.

The accident happened at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of 39th Street and Western Avenue.

Ambulances were called to the scene to treat the two officers and the driver of the SUV, who had suffered diabetic shock or seizure prior to the crash, officials said.

Rescue crews had to use the jaws of life to free the SUV driver.

All three were taken to area hospitals. The officers were said to be in stable condition, while the SUV driver was listed in critical condition.

Officers inside the cruiser were able to radio for help after the collision.
