LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Authorities are investigating the discovery of a charred body in the Cypress Park area of Los Angeles.

Fire crews were called to an alley in the area of Figueroa Street and Avenue 28 around 2:30 a.m. Friday after reports of a rubbish fire.

Once the flames were out, crews discovered the body of a man.

Investigators say the man's body was wrapped in a tarp and then set on fire.

The victim was burned beyond recognition.

Homicide detectives said it's possible the victim may have been dead before he was dumped in the alley and set on fire.

LAPD detectives and Los Angeles Fire Department officials are investigating the circumstances of the death.
