LOS ANGELES -- A dangerous police pursuit that went off-road and in the wrong direction at times ended with two men in custody this morning.

A man believed to have been driving a stolen Lexus sport utility vehicle led Los Angeles Police on a wild chase from West Los Angeles, through Culver City and back toward the Mid-City area.

The chase started sometime before 9:30 a.m. on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway. The suspect exited at Olympic Boulevard, where he collided with another vehicle but kept going.

The chase continued on surface streets, transitioned to the Santa Monica (10) Freeway, went north and south on Robertston Boulevard, then into Baldwin Hills.

At one point, the pursuit went across dirt roads in Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, and the suspect got onto Stocker Street.

The SUV narrowly missed hitting another vehicle as the driver tried to go the wrong way on La Cienega and crashed into a curb.

At that point, the suspect bailed out of the vehicle and tried to run away.

One officer cut him off by driving a patrol car into his path.

Minutes later, the suspect, out of breath and with nowhere to go, surrendered peacefully.

A passenger in the SUV was also taken into custody.

It was not immediately known where the luxury SUV was allegedly stolen from.
