SOUTH LOS ANGELES -- A pursuit suspect was shot and wounded after a standoff on the streets of South Los Angeles turned into a shootout.
The shooting was reported shortly after 10 a.m. near Avalon Boulevard and 59th Street, where police were sent on an "officer needs help" call.
LAPD sources tell KTLA that officers from the Newton division were following what they believed was a stolen vehicle. Concerned that occupants inside the car might be armed and dangerous, officers called for ground and aerial support.
When the officers tried to stop the car that was traveling southbound on Avalon, two occupants ran from the vehicle and were taken into custody. Police officials say the driver of the car kept going, driving another 17 blocks as officers pursed.
The suspect's vehicle came to a stop at the intersection of 59th Street and Avalon. The driver began shooting at police, according to authorities. The officers shot back, wounding the driver.
Helicopter footage taken over the scene showed the suspect, inside the gray Geo Metro, moving with a handgun by his side and blood on the front seat.
Dozens of gunshots shattered the windshield of the victim's car and pierced the side of the vehicle. Another vehicle, nearby, was also hit by multiple gunshots.
Officers, with guns drawn, surrounded the car, along with SWAT teams. The wounded suspect was taken into custody shortly before 12:30 p.m. and was transported to a nearby hospital. He suffered several gunshot wounds, but there is no official word on his condition.
