LOS ANGELES -- An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy shot someone in the chest in Boyle Heights early Saturday after being "jumped by multiple suspects," according to police.

The shooting happened outside Mariscos Puerto Escondido restaurant, 3740 Whittier Blvd., just before 2 a.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Rick McClure.

The wounded man was taken to County-USC Medical Center in critical condition.

The man was later said to be in stable condition, according to Deputy Steve Whitmore.

The deputy's girlfriend was jumped by several women when she went to the bathroom at the restaurant. The deputy tried to come to her aid, and several men confronted him, Whitmore said.

An officer said an argument that escalated led to the shooting, which happened outside the restaurant.

Police said they believe the deputy was jumped by multiple suspects.

"We have a couple people in custody, including one with a gunshot to the chest area," said Sgt. E. Imaizumi.

Whitmore said three people were in custody.
