LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- The CHP says its planning to crack down on distracted drivers -- and that doesn't just mean people talking or texting on their cellphones.
From 6 a.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday, officials say they will be enforcing a zero tolerance for distracted driving, including eating while driving, applying makeup, or reading the newspaper.
Marked CHP vehicles will be patrolling, as well as unmarked cars.
There is no law against eating while driving, but under California's vehicle code, a distracted driver can be ticketed for having "wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property."
Fines range from $145 to $1,000. Authorities hope the prospect of hefty fines will encourage people to give up their bad habits.
"I think it's really good, because it makes people pay more attention to what they're actually doing, which is driving, and causes less accidents," Hollywood driver Rodrigo Perez said.
One driver admitted she's been distracted while behind the wheel.
"I curl my eyelashes, pluck my eyebrows... all those types of things," Janet Huynh said, adding, "I think I'm gonna stop that now."
