LOS ANGELES -- There were two separate pit bull attacks in Los Angeles neighborhoods Saturday, both with deadly endings.

In the first incident, a woman shot and killed a pit bull to break up a dog fight in South Los Angeles Saturday morning, according to authorities.

The shooting was reported around 10:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Rosecrans Avenue, near the Harbor Freeway, Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Philip Thompson said.

The woman was about to walk her dog when the pit bulls attacked.

She and the owner of the pit bulls were unable to stop the fight, so the woman ran to her apartment and grabbed her gun, Thompson said.

"She shot one of the pit bulls to stop the fight," according to Thompson. He said he didn't know how many shots were fired.

The second pit bull ran away, but the dog she shot died at the scene.

The woman's own dog had non-serious injuries and was expected to survive.

The gun was registered to the woman, Thompson said.

Adam Mason saw the ordeal, but he told KTLA he thought using a gun was unnecessary, since the shots were fired after the attack had been broken up.

"They play with my kids all the time," Mason said of the pit bulls. "They're not trouble dogs."

In the second attack, Katherine Keith was walking her two small Malteses in North Hollywood when two pit bulls attacked them.

"It was absolutely horrific," Keith told KTLA. "I was holding one dog... and I picked the other one up, and right when I picked her up, the pit bull comes up and just grabs her and chomps her." Keith's dog bit her several times as she tried to hold onto her during the fight.

Neighbors were eventually able to break up the attack, but one of Keith's dogs, 11-year-old Precious, didn't survive.

The pit bulls were caught, and animal control came to collect them. They'll be put down peacefully.
