PERKINS, OK -- Authorities in Oklahoma say an infant has died after being attacked by a dog on tribal land near Perkins.
Stillwater firefighters dispatched an ambulance to Iowa Tribe land about 11:20 a.m. Monday after receiving a call that a child had been bitten by a dog.
It was later determined that 8-month-old Justin Lopez died from blunt-force trauma to head.
The child was attacked by a rottweiler at a rural residence, south of Perkins Monday.
Relatives say the family had only brought the dog home the day before.
Family member Stephen Wood says many dogs roam freely around the property.
"I don't know if (the dog) jumped up, took (the girl) out of her arms, or if (the baby) was laying in the bed, and (the dog) came in there and bit her in the bed," Wood says, "but they're the kind of people that will let the dogs in the house. I think it was irresponsible to have one around an infant."
Wood says the family got the dog to protect their property.
