PALMDALE-- A domestic abuse suspect on the run from sheriff's deputies led a high speed freeway pursuit before surrendering to authorities.

When sheriff's officers responded to a domestic abuse call Thursday evening, the suspect fled in his black Cadillac STF around 8:00 p.m., leading the deputies on a chase.

California Highway Patrol officials believe the man, identified as Joseph Michael Ward, took a woman and a child with him in the vehicle initially, though they were both let out early on in the chase.

The woman, believed to be his girlfriend, refused to cooperate with authorities, CHP officials say.

Starting from Palmdale, the chase went south down the 14 freeway then down the 5 and 10 freeways toward Los Angeles, breaking 100 miles per hour at some points.

Ward led authorities on a chase around Los Angeles before making his way back to Palmdale on the northbound 14 freeway.

He called CHP officers, telling them he would give himself up at a Sheriff's station, though he continued to swerve all over the freeway.

At around 10:20 p.m., Ward pulled into the parking lot of the Palmdale Sheriff's station and surrendered to authorities.

Ward was believed to be armed and had asked repeatedly to speak to his girlfriend, CHP officials say.

Ward allegedly had a felony warrant out for grand theft and was driving on a suspended license.

He also faces possible charges of domestic violence, kidnapping, failure to stop, and failure to yield stemming from Thursday's pursuit.
