Police investigate the scene of a fatal accident near the entrance to the 110 Freeway in Downtown Los Angeles. (KTLA-TV / July 19, 2011)

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Police have released a driver in an apparent road rage crash that killed a bicyclist in Downtown Los Angeles Tuesday evening.

The crash happened near the entrance to the 110 Freeway at the intersection of Francisco and 8th streets around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses said traffic in the area was bumper-to-bumper before the incident occurred.

According to preliminary reports, the drivers of a Chevrolet Avalanche and a Kia compact car may have been involved in some kind of dispute and the Avalanche struck the bicyclist while trying to pass the Kia on the right.

The 62-year-old male victim, whose identity was not released, died at the scene.

The driver of the Avalanche -- a 37-year-old man -- was detained but later released. Police said it was possible charges could be filed at a later date.

The driver of the Kia, a 23-year-old woman, stayed at the scene but was not detained.
