LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- The Automobile Club of Southern California is among several transportation agencies doing their part to keep drunken drivers off the roadways by offering a free tow service for drunk drivers this New Year's Eve weekend.

The "Tipsy Tow" program is being offered through 6 a.m. Sunday in the 13 Southland counties served by the Auto Club.

Motorists, bartenders, restaurant managers, party hosts or passengers of a drinking driver can call (800) 400-4AAA for a free tow to the driver's residence of up to 7 miles away -- whether they are AAA members or not.

Callers should simply tell operators they want a Tipsy Tow, and a tow truck under contract to the Auto Club will be dispatched.

Those opting for a more luxurious ride can call Galpin Ford and Jackson Limousine Service for free van and sedan rides within the L.A. basin.

The pick-ups will take you to your destination within a 10 mile radius from 11 p.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Sunday.

To schedule a ride, call 1-800-522-9955.

And for those taking public transportation can enjoy free rides on any MTA bus or rail service overnight on New Year's Eve from 9 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.

Transportation will be free on the Metro Red, Purple, Gold, Blue and Green lines, as well as the Metro Orange Line.

The Auto Club offered the following safety tips:

-- Designate a non-drinking driver who can get everyone home safely

-- Call a friend or family member for a ride home if you have been drinking

-- Keep a taxi company number in your wallet so you can call for a ride home

-- As a party host, offer non-alcoholic drinks and provide a gift to guests who volunteer to be designated drivers

-- Take car keys away from friends and relatives who have had too much to drink.
