LOS ANGELES -- A woman was killed early Sunday when the car she was driving careened into a Subway restaurant in Echo Park, police say.

The collision happened about 2 a.m. in the 2200 block of Sunset Boulevard when the black Honda sheared a fire hydrant, struck a light pole and smashed into the sandwich shop, said Los Angeles police Lt. Larry Ito.

The driver, described as a woman in her early 20s, was seen spending down sunset, witnesses said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, also in her 20s, was taken to a hospital in conscious but critical condition.
