'Mythbusters' Rocket Man Dies in Freak Accident
THOUSAND OAKS -- Erik Gates, who contributed to the popular Discovery Channel show "MythBusters" as its "Amateur Rocket Expert," has died.

He was 47.

On Sunday, December 20th, Gates was doing electrical work on the roof of a building in Newbury Park, when he fell 30 feet from a skylight.

The cause of death was determined to be blunt force chest injuries.

On its Twitter page, "MythBusters" tweeted, "Team MB wishes to express our deepest sympathies on the passing of our beloved rocket expert, Erik," followed by "You were an honorary MythBuster and will be sorely missed."

Gates, a married father of three, was active in rocketry.

He and his brother maintained the Web site, Gates Brothers Rocketry, which chronicled the hobby the brothers shared with their families and details on the model rockets they would fire.

Gates studied at Moorpark College and was an avid skydiver, according to the Web site.

Gates also worked on several episodes of the Discovery Channel program “Mythbusters.”
