LOS ANGELES -- A downed eucalyptus tree knocked out power to about 2,000 Department of Water and Power customers and closed Laurel Canyon Boulevard early Saturday.
Firefighters responded to calls in the area around midnight and looked for a car crash near Lookout Mountain Avenue but did not find one. Instead, a sizable tree was found blocking all of Laurel Canyon Boulevard.
The tree broke two wooden utility poles and knocked out a transformer when it fell.
The incident happened not far from where a section of Mulholland eroded away during last weekend's rainstorms, which dumped about 4 inches of rain in the Hollywood Hills.
Power to about 2,000 customers was knocked out, but was restored by 12:45 p.m.
Authorities closed Laurel Canyon Boulevard from Mulholland Drive to Lookout Mountain Avenue while crews cut the eucalyptus tree and fixed damaged equipment.
Because of the Mulholland Drive landslide closure, southbound Laurel Canyon traffic was diverted east at the Mulholland signal, and was directed to use Woodrow Wilson Drive and Nichols Canyon Road south to Hollywood.
Northbound traffic towards the Valley was routed via Lookout Mountain and Laurel Pass avenues, and then east on Mulholland.
