LOS ANGELES -- A greater-alarm fire in downtown Los Angeles led to an unexpected discovery; an indoor pot farm, according to LAPD officials.

The fire broke out around 6:40 a.m. at 6th Street and Santa Fe Avenue at a one story commercial structure. 75 firefighters battled the blaze for nearly 40 minutes before declaring it knocked down, according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department. No one was hurt.

Once inside the structure, fire investigators discovered "grow lights" used for cultivating marijuana. They called in the LAPD for further investigation. Police spokesman Richard French confirmed the discovery of marijuana "growing equipment" inside the structure.

Police spokesman Richard French says the building contained a hydroponics pot farm.

Officer Tenesha Dobine says police dragged dozens of bags filled with marijuana out of the building. An estimated 1,000 plants burned in the fire with an estimated street value of $1 million.

Investigators are trying to determine whether electrical equipment used in the operation may have sparked the blaze.
