Saturday morning's head-on collision was the first reported crash related to the 405 shutdown (KTLA-TV / July 16, 2011)

LOS ANGELES, Calif (KTLA) -- A driver is dead after crossing over the center divider and colliding head-on with another vehicle on Sepulveda Boulevard early Saturday, according to a statement released by The Los Angeles Police Department.

The victim, a 28-year-old Los Angeles resident, was driving a red 1987 Honda Civic northbound just after midnight when he crossed over the center divider into oncoming traffic, according to the statement, and slammed head-on into a 2001 Porsche Carrera in the 3700 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard near Valley Meadow Road in Sherman Oaks.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of kin.

The driver of the Porsche, a 61-year-old male from Encino, sustained minor injuries.

Neither car carried any passengers.

Sepulveda Blvd. is one of the major thoroughfares being used to avoid the 405 shutdown.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
