1 killed in Fontana house fire (KTLA-TV) |
FONTANA, Calif. (KTLA) -- Investigators say intense family drama may be to blame for an intentional explosion and subsequent fire at a house in Fontana.
It happened around 9:15 p.m. in the 14400 block of Southwood Drive.
The force of the explosion was so strong that it blew out all the windows and sent tiles flying off the roof.
The garage door went flying 40 feet into the street, according to firefighters.
Neighbors told KTLA that a father, mother and their four children lived in the house.
Everyone was accounted for except the father, but police have not officially identified him as the victim.
It's believed that the mother and children were not in the house at the time of the explosion.
Neighbors said the couple had been fighting and may have been planning to divorce.
"They're saying that they were fighting, that they were going to divorce, and that the guy, because he got mad for the divorce, he's all like 'I'm going to burn the house down,'" one neighbor said.
"And that's what happened. He burns it down," he added.
Arson investigators were called to the scene. They combed through the rubble with arson dogs.
Police investigators say they believe an intentional natural gas leak was involved.
The surrounding homes had to be evacuated, displacing about 7 or 8 homeowners.
