ANAHEIM -- An autopsy was pending Saturday on a man fatally shot by four or five Anaheim police officers in a Wal-Mart parking lot after he evaded officers.

The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Anaheim Plaza in the 400 block of North Euclid Street, said Sgt. Rick Martinez of the Anaheim Police Department.

"Our undercover officers received information that a known former parolee was in the area in a green Suburban," Martinez said.

The former parolee was reportedly armed with a handgun, which prompted police to pursue him.

When officers attempted to pull the 35 year old suspect over at Loara Street, he ignored them and kept going west into the shopping center parking lot, Martinez said.

The officers were able to block the suspect in before he could leave the parking lot, and that's when "an officer-involved shooting occurred," Martinez said.

Between four and five officers shot at the suspect in the vehicle, according to Martinez. He added that he did not know why the officers shot at the suspect.

"As to whether he shot at us, I don't know," Martinez said.

The suspect was transported to the UCI Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at around 4:00 p.m., according to Martinez.

His identity was not released, pending family notification.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, though it is unknown whether the suspect fired any shots at the officers.

The Orange County district attorney's office will investigate the shooting.
