FULLERTON -- A pumpkin shot from a makeshift cannon Saturday tore a hole in the scoreboard at Titan Stadium at Cal State Fullerton.

The pumpkin launch was not a Halloween prank but an engineering experiment sponsored by the Discovery Science Center.

A group of college engineering students who called themselves "Students without Borders" built a cannon -- which they named Pumpkin Lobber -- that used pressurized air to fire the pumpkin, Keith Brush, a director of education at the Discovery Science Center.

The students were shooting for two plywood targets about 50 yards away, but instead, the pumpkin sailed 120 yards, over the targets, hitting the scoreboard at the top of the stadium.

A damage estimate was unavailable.

About 3,000 people, most kindergarten to college students, participated in the center's second annual "Pumpkin Launch," which is supposed to get young people interested in math, science and engineering. The students were involved in other activities as well as the pumpkin launch.

Brush said the center will talk to university officials about the damage, in hopes that CSUF will let them return next year.
